In 2024, the Indonesian national football team achieved several important achievements under the guidance of coach Shin Tae-yong. In March, Indonesia managed to beat Vietnam twice in qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with wins 1-0 in Jakarta and 3-0 in Hanoi. The win in Hanoi marked the first time since 2004 that Indonesia beat Vietnam on home soil. This result brought Indonesia to second place in the group with 7 points and made them surpass the Philippines and Malaysia in the FIFA rankings, which is the first time in 5 years that Indonesia has been above Malaysia.

On 25 April 2024, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir announced Shin Tae-yong’s contract extension until 2027. In June, Indonesia lost 0-2 to Iraq at home, but managed to beat the Philippines 2-0 in the final match of the second round of qualifying. As runner-up in Group F, Indonesia qualified for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and for the first time in history advanced to the third round of World Cup qualifying.

In the third round, Indonesia was joined in Group C with Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, China and Bahrain. In September 2024, Indonesia drew 1-1 against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah and 0-0 against Australia at home. In October, Indonesia drew 2-2 with Bahrain in Riffa and lost 1-2 to China in Qingdao. In November, Indonesia suffered a 0-4 defeat to Japan at home. However, Indonesia made a surprise by beating Saudi Arabia 2-0, with Marselino Ferdinan scoring twice, breaking the record for Southeast Asian countries that have never beaten Saudi Arabia.

In November 2024, FIFA announced disciplinary sanctions against Indonesia regarding various team and individual incidents.
